Still Burning

National Guard Blackhawk helicopters equipped with Bambi buckets drop water on the marsh fire in New Orleans East. We may get some help from Mother Nature in the next several days from a tropical depression that’s expected to bring some heavy rainfall.

The chances of dying in a car crash are greatest in the month of August.

According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration records going back to 1994, more American die in car crashes in August than at any other time of the year.

The deadliest days are on the weekends, since that’s when people tend to run extra errands, visit family members or take more day trips, and when drunken driving increases.

Saturdays have the most crash-related fatalities.

Sundays were the second deadliest in 2009, with an average of 107 deaths, followed by 102 on Fridays.

The good news is that August is half way over.

Even Celebrities are not immune from criminals in New York. Gavin DeGraw (I Don’t Want To Be) was beat up on the streets of Manhattan over the weekend. Aparently he was out having a good time with his friend, and his friends had just left him when the attack happened.

Gavin suffered a concussion, a broken nose, black eyes and facial lacerations. He’s out of the hospital and ok, but he had to cancel some concert dates this week.

Ready to have the time of your life all over again?

What would Patrick Swayze think about this? Lionsgate has just announced that it will remake the 1987 classic “Dirty Dancing”, which starred Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey.

Kenny Ortega, who choreographed the original film and was working on Michael Jackson’s final tour (This Is It) will direct the remake.

Hollywood is running out of original films, so look for more of your favorites to  return and they will most likely be in 3D.

The Cintas Corporation, which sells commercial bathroom supplies and other products is conducting a best restroom in the nation contest and so far Don’s Johns porta-potty is one of the ten finalists. The luxury restroom trailer was originally built for President Barack Obama’s inauguration, and it has granite counter tops, a climate control and an audio system.

Take a look at some of the finalists.

Haley Reinhart first auditioned for the ninth season of American Idol in Chicago, but did not advance to the Hollywood round. She returned for the tenth season the following year, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and this time was put through to Hollywood. She went on to finish third this season and was recently awarded with a record deal. She signed with 19 Recordings/Interscope Records, so look for a cd real soon.

The most popular company for movie rentals is about to lose some of it’s customers.

Netflix recently anounced a 60 percent price increase on it’s DVD mail deliver service and it streaming movie plan. That set off a wave of angry customers and lit up the facebook and twitter accounts. 2 million customers have said they will cancel the service which seems like a lot, but keep in mind that Netflix says it has 25 million subscribers.

I have the Netflix stream service only and I think it’s a very good bargain compared to some of the other services. But I have to agree with the 2 million people that are canceling that the 60 percent increase is too much for the DVD delivery and the stream service.  Most people like to watch a movie on the weekends, and with the DVD delivery you only have time to order one movie  for the weekend, and once you watch it, you don’t have time to return it to get another one before the weekend is up. The solution would be to put the new releases on the stream, so we can watch them anytime we get ready. That would justify a 60 percent increase in the price.

A few words of caution for Netflix. Remember a lot of the customers you have now are the ones that used to go to Blockbuster to rent a movie, and we all know what happened to Blockbuster.
