So Tropical Storm Katia was gaining strength as it moved quickly across the Atlantic today not a problem for us at all and forecasters predict it could take a Northly turn and not hit the East coast at all. We hope so as they continue to deal with tha aftermath of Irene. So now we have KATIA. Wierd name huh? Well Storms are named years in advance and used over unless the name is retired after causing major damage. Are you following me? The name KATIA was actually KATRINA to be used again. But of course that name was retired so when it came up on the list they dropped the R and the N (KATRINA). Interesting huh?
Last year we had a lot more ceremonies around the area and more attention nationally on the 5th year anniversary of Katrina. But now 6 years after Katrina not alot of ceremonies around town the main focus for most of us is to continue to rebuild this great city and remember this day and all that we went through. We all have our stories but let’s also remember today the people that lost their loves 6 years ago….. Tropicals are quite just heat and smoke from a marsh fire to deal with today.
So who do you think is the most Powerful Woman in the World. Locally Saints part owner and Vice President Rita Benson LeBlanc has to be in the top 5. We have some strong powerful women on our City Council and working behind Mayor Mitch Landrieu. And we have some powerful business owners that are women, like the Demo Diva. None of them get onto Forbes’ annual 100 Most Powerful Women list? They come from: billionaires, business, lifestyle, media, nonprofits, and politics. Remember these candidates were ranked by money, traditional and social media influence, and their “reach” or power base. The top 10 and some others.:
Angela Merkel: Chancellor of Germany
Hillary Clinton: Secretary of State, United States
Dilma Rousseff: President of Brazil
Indra Nooyi: Chief Executive of PepsiCo
Sheryl Sandberg: COO of Facebook
Melinda Gates: Co-founder and co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation
Sonia Gandhi: President of the Indian National Congress Party
Michelle Obama: First lady, United States
Christine Lagarde: Director of the International Monetary Fund
Buildings had to be evacuated and airports shut down for a short time today after an Earthquake centered in Virginia was felt all up the North East Coast. Didn’t cause major damage or injuries, but major cities like New York were inspecting bridges and buildings and in Washington they closed museums and national monuments. It was a 5.9-magnitude quake and this weekend that same area may be dealing with Hurricane Irene… an earthquake and hurricane in the same week?
One of the most beloved City Council menbers is leaving. I know City Council members are usually corrupt or unqualified. But that has changed in the last several years with Good poeple with visionary idea’s. One of those people is leaving as Arnie Fielkow has resigned. He has a chance to make a whole lot more money for his family in a new job as the new chief executive officer of the National Basketball Retired Players Association but located in Chicago. he had helped rebuild this city, bring it’s people together and kept the Saints here when Benson wanted out after Katrina. He is a great man and while we wish him well we worry about who is worthy to take his place.
I cannot watch a Saints game without turning down the sound on my TV and listening to Jim and Hokie broadcast on WWL the flagship station of the Saints Radio Network. Sometimes I put the big speakers on sometimes I have a mini radio with headphones, BUT now something to be excited about. You can now listen to Saints games LIVE on your computer at WWL.com! It’s FREE you do have to first sign up for the WWL Big Talkers Club; they won’t share your email address with anyone. You only need to sign up once;you should note that running a live audio stream on your computer does count as data usage on your internet plan. You may want to check with your internet service provider if you think streaming several hours a week could make an impact on your data usage limitations with your particular internet provider. It’s really cool because not only locals but the Who Dat nation including our troops overseas can now listen online. One problem if you watching the game with WWL broadcast on a computer it requires massive “buffering” of the audio to ensure that everyone can hear the game. That process does result in a significant delay between what you see on TV and what you hear on WWL.com. If you have a DVR, however, you could also pause your video to let the streaming audio “catch up,” and then you’ll be in sync. GO SAINTS-GO WWL Radio
As quick as heavy storms form around here this is something we can relate too but tragically 5 people have died from their injuries when a massive gust of wind brought down a stage at the Indiana State Fair on Saturday night, killing at least 5 and injuring 24, officials said. Authorities said they feared more casualties. “A big gust of wind came through. You could see a lot of people panicking. All the scaffolding and speakers — all that came crashing down — and the whole stand just collapsed,” said Aaron Richman, who witnessed the collapse at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis. The Indianapolis Department of Public Safety posted on its Twitter page the death toll and said that 24 people had been taken to area hospitals. Two local hospitals placed the number of injured at 43, including some walk-in patients. Capt. Brad Weaver, commander of special operations for the Indiana State Police, said he took the stage at 8:45 p.m. to warn the audience of severe weather. Ten minutes later, the wind gust blew through. He said he “saw the framework from the stage start to come over.” He said he and others took cover behind a trailer, which was also struck by debris from the stage. Sara Bareilles had finished her set at the Hoosier Lottery Grandstand stage when the wind knocked down the rigging on to the stage. “I’m speechless and feel so helpless,” Bareilles said on her Twitter page. “My heart aches for the lives lost.” The show’s headliners, country music duo Sugarland, was to take the stage next. “We are stunned and heartbroken for the fans and their families in Indiana.” said Sugarland singer Jennifer Nettles. “We hold those injured in our prayers at this very sad time. There are no words. It is tragic.”.”
Just 24 hours away from Gameday and the start of the Saints preseason. Who Dat, it’s the 49’s from San Francisco at the Dome at 7pm. If you got tickets you will be one of the first fans to see all the newly completed upgrades to the Superdome. Some say all the improvements and “all the bells and whistles” makes it like a new facility. The latest work is part of a multi-phase $336 million project begun after Hurricane Katrina wrecked the building, stripping away part of the roof and dumping water throughout.
Saints owner Tom Benson says the result is equivalent to the new facility he was pushing for before the 2005 storm. Gov. Bobby Jindal says work was done at a fraction of the cost of a new stadium and the Superdome will provide $41.1 billion in economic benefits to the city and state. GO SAINTS
