We just lost our “World’s Longest Bridge Over Water”. Somebody else built a longer one that opened today. China has opened the world’s longest cross-sea bridge that beats the Causeway by 2.5 miles. The Jiaozhou Bay Bridge is 26 miles long and links China’s eastern port city of Qingdao to the island of Huangdao. The 110-foot wide bridge is the longest of its kind and cost more than 10 billion yuan (That’s $1.5 billion to you and me). The bridge passed inspections this week and opened today. The bridge supported by more than 5,000 pillars was built in four years. Guinness World Records will now make the change from the previous record holder for a bridge over water the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway to the Chinese bridge is they confirm is more than 2.5 miles longer.
