Song Lyrics
Posted in: Steve
So I know I have way too much time on my hands between songs cause sometimes I have a habit of OVERTHINKING the lyrics to songs. Can’t I just sing along. I know it’s not all about the words, but for me, the words do matter. For example..like in the song from Joe Cocker “You Are So Beautiful” really isn’t much of a compliment, he should just leave it at that right instead of clarifing his statement by adding “you are so beautiful…TO ME.” In other words, the rest of the world may think you’re a dog, but TO ME you’re cute. I told you I overthink these things like Billy Joel doesn’t “want clever conversation,” he never wants to “work that hard”? (What?) . The late Dan Fogelberg great song writer but in his song “Leader of the Band” a touching tribute to a father, but “His blood runs through my instrument?” Uh, Ewww. And “I am the living legacy to the leader of the band”? Nice sentiment, but how can you be a “living legacy to” anyone? Please don’t get me wrong, I don’t expect all lyrics to make sense. Sometimes the rhythm of the song works and we all go with it. But I go crazy over Steve Miller’s ”pompatus of love” and the Eagles’ “warm smell of colitas” in “Hotel California,” and even though those are probably made-up words, they work for me. Next time your singing along to Jason Mraz’s “I’m Yours” on Magic do you hear “ I’ve been spending way too long checking my tongue in the mirror Bending over backwards just to try to see it clearer. Is it just me???
